12th Annual Mayor’s Youth Summit
Over 2000 teens came together at the Bank of America Pavilion
for the 2006 Mayor's Youth Summit. The theme "Bigger Than
Your Block" challenged
teens to take a chance in discovering all of Boston and the
world.
Our entertaining MC's and Mayor's Youth Council Representatives Amity
Paye and Ben Morris introduced to us many live acts. Some of those
included dancing, singing, and inspiring guest speakers. The wide
variety of entertainment showed us just a glimpse of the many
interesting programs available in Boston.
To give us a better of idea of what is available, there were over 100
organizations that joined us at the summit and had resource tables.
Those organizations made things available such as information about
their programs and ways a Boston teen can become involved. This helped
portray another reason why it is important to use the resources that are
available. Especially when they are so interesting!
There were many raffle prizes available to win this year. Those prizes
include concert tickets, Red Sox tickets, Celtics tickets, sport gear
signed by professionals, food raffles, and much more - and many teens
won these cool prizes.
Mayor Menino highlighted many important things about teens in Boston,
including why he valued being around so many young people. He said
"People often say that young people are the leaders of tomorrow but I
believe that we don't have to wait - young people have the ability to
lead right now with the guidance of all the great youth service agencies
and programs in Boston like we have at the resource tables here today.
Do not underestimate the positive impact you can have at your school and
in your community."
