8th Annual Mayor's Youth Summit
Coming Together for Your Future
The 8th annual Mayor’s Youth Summit was held April 13, 2002 at Northeastern University’s Matthews Arena. The theme was “Coming Together For Your Future” and the day’s events
focused on how teens can access the resources necessary to prepare for their futures. In addition to numerous performances by talented youth from across the city, the audience heard from youth speakers who shared some of their experiences of growing up and the choices they have made for their futures.

The Summit began with the presentation of the American Flag by the color guards from the Boston Police, Fire and EMS, along with representatives of the East Boston High ROTC. The National Anthem was sung by the Boston Arts Academy Four Testaments. God Bless America was sung by Teri Kelly from South Boston. Mayor Thomas Menino thanked all the teens that presented, preformed and participated in this year’s Summit. He encouraged everyone to visit the more than 75 resource tables in the information center and take advantage of the programs available.

Speakers included author of “A Walking Peace” Nathan Landers, Boston Community Centers youthworker Jani Raynor, Miss Boston Christina Perella, and one of GLAMOUR Magazine’s Top Ten 2002 College Women Nancy Redd. There were also several dynamic skits covering topics such as diversity, date rape, mental health, and HIV and AIDS as well as a skit on parent and teen communication. The vocal and dance performances by youth groups from all over Boston were FANTASTIC!
Special thanks to our host Northeastern University President Richard Freeland, and Summit Sponsors Verizon, FleetBoston Financial Foundation, Mellon New England, Hard Rock Cafe, and the Boston Police Activities League.
