Samuel Brehm Scholarship

The Samuel B. Brehm Scholarship was established in 1987 by Dr. and Mrs. Harold Brehm in honor of Dr. Brehm's father. The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage Boston public high school graduates to pursue a four-year college education.

Eligibility:

Graduate of Boston public high school

Criteria:

Must demonstrate strong academic potential and have unmet financial need; must have a record of self-help in financing one's own education; may enter the University with up to 90 college credits; students must file a Comprehensive Scholarship Application with the University of Massachusetts Merit-Based Scholarship Office with high school and/or college transcripts, and academic letter of reference and an essay

William M. Bulger Award and Scholarship Program

In honor of Senator William M. Bulger's service to the Commonwealth and citizens of Boston, the scholarship program recognizes and encourages students who exemplify Senator Bulger's philosophy of perseverance in pursuit of education and personal goals.

Eligibility:

High school senior, nominated by the headmasters and principals of private and public high schools in Boston

Criteria:

Official copy of students's academic record; three letters of recommendation; typed autobiographical essay, no longer than 1,000 words

Recipients selected from a pool of high school seniors

Chancellor's Scholarship for Excellence

Eligibility:

Acceptance to UMass Boston, seeking first bachelor's degree; legal resident of Massachusetts; must meet one of the following: 1) academic excellence, 2) excellence in the arts, 3) extraordinary a achievement in unpaid public service

Criteria:

High school transcript, including rank in class and SAT scores; autobiographical essay and essay question, each not more than 1,000 words; or portfolio or audition; or public service record; freshman: top 10% rank or SAT scores of 1150 or better, G.E.D. of 80 or better;

Award:

Full tuition and mandatory fees up to 120 credits

The Fleet Bank/UMass Boston Scholarship Program

Eligibility:

Students who have completed 29 or more UMass Boston credits, have graduated from a Boston public school and reside in Dorchester, Roxbury or South Boston. Preference will be given to students who meet the above criteria and are employees of Fleet Bank who are preparing for careers in management or science and technology.

Solid academic standing and demonstrated financial need

Applicants are selected from qualified candidates who apply through the Comprehensive Scholarship Program. Decisions are made by the Scholarship Committee

Taylor Outstanding Scholars Program

The John I. Taylor and William Davis Taylor Outstanding Scholars Program was created by the Boston Globe Foundation and UMass Boston to provide scholarship assistance to "ranking and fiscally deserving students" of the Boston public high school system. The University provides on-going assistance to ensure the successful completion of the scholar's academic progress.

Eligibility:

Current graduates of Boston Public Schools; admitted and planning to attend UMass Boston

Criteria:

Strong potential for academic success at the college level; demonstrated a high level of student citizenship during high school

Selection:

The headmaster of each Boston public high school nominates one student

Award:

50% of tutition and fees

High school seniors or recent graduates must have SAT scores of at least 1400 or a cumulative grade point average (after seven semesters) of 3.7 or rank in the top five percent of their high school graduating class

Demonstrated motivation for high academic achievement plus autobiographical essay and three letters of reference.

Qualified students are invited to interview for the scholarship

The Michael A. Ventresca Scholarship was established to honor a respected political idealist, activist, and lawyer. Ventresca was president of the first graduating class of the University of Massachusetts at Boston in 1969 and a former president of the Alumni Association.

Eligibility:

Meet regular admission criteria for incoming freshman; resident of Massachusetts; graduate of Massachusetts high school

Criteria:

Demonstrated potential for academic success and the prospect of continuing in public service upon completion of education; 500 word personal statement describing extracurricular activities or community service; letter of recommendation; interview required of all finalists

Selection:

Tuition payments renewable up to four years (up to $2,100 per year)
