Thurgood Marshall Scholarship

Description: The Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund (TMSF) is the only national organization that provides scholarship, programmatic and capacity building support to Public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). TMSF was founded in 1987, under the leadership of Dr. N. Joyce Payne, Director of the Office for the Advancement of Public Black Colleges (a division of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges), in cooperation with Miller Brewing Company, and the American Association for State Colleges and Universities. The Fund's mission is to provide opportunities for students attending Public HBCUs to reach or even surpass, the level of academic excellence and community service achieved by the late Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, a graduate of Lincoln University and Howard University Law School. Recipients of Thurgood Marshall Scholarships have demonstrated exemplary achievement in academic studies, or exceptional talents in the creative and performing arts. TMSF awards scholarships to qualifying students attending one of our 45 member schools.
Eligibility: A citizen of the United States of America, Full-time student pursuing a degree in any discipline at one of the 45 TMSF member schools, Demonstrated commitment to academic excellence and community service with a high school GPA of not less than 3.0; a combined verbal/math score of 1650 or more on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or a score of 25 or higher on the American College Testing (ACT) examination, Recommended by their high school as academically exceptional or outstanding in the creative and performing arts. Demonstrated financial need. Maintain not less than 3.0 GPA each year for the duration of the scholarship.
Criteria: Students interested in a TMSF scholarship should contact a scholarship coordinator at any member college or university and apply through the school.
Selection: Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund
Award: Up to $2200 per semester, based on financial need. Renewable, but not guaranteed. Award amounts are based on the costs of and are restricted to payment of tuition, room, board, books and fees. All awards are sent directly to the school.
