| Description: | The Henry David Thoreau Foundation attracts and sustains outstanding young leaders in diverse disciplines who will safeguard the environmental welfare of future generations. Candidates for the Henry David Thoreau Scholarship must be residents of Massachusetts. The candidates must also be enrolled in and graduate from a Massachusetts high school in the year they apply for a scholarship and begin college studies. Students with strong academic qualifications and a commitment to the environmental field may apply for an undergraduate scholarship totaling up to $20,000 to the student's accredited institution of choice. After enrolling and choosing any major, they are required to carry 25 percent of their undergraduate course work in subjects related to the environment. To maintain scholarship assistance, Scholars are required to submit an annual report of their activities in the environmental field, including academic courses. Scholars must provide an official copy of their transcript at the end of each marking period and maintain more than a 2.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale to remain eligible for scholarship support. |
| Eligibility: | Candidates for the Henry David Thoreau Scholarship must be Massachusetts residents. The candidates must also be enrolled in, then be graduated from, a high school in Massachusetts, and begin college studies in the same year that they apply for a scholarship. |
| Criteria: | The Henry David Thoreau Foundation attracts and sustains outstanding young leaders in diverse disciplines who will safeguard the environmental welfare of future generations. Students with strong academic qualifications and a demonstrated commitment to environmental fields may apply for an undergraduate scholarship totaling up to $30,000, usually distributed at $7,500 per year for tuition use only, to the student’s institution of choice. All aplicants must submit a résumé, three recommendations, an official high school transcript, official results of standardized tests (SAT’s and/or ACT’s and Achievement Exams), a statement of financial need may be requested, an essay regarding your education and life goals, and an interview may be required. |
