| Description: | For over a decade, Dr. Thomas W. Payzant served as Superintendent of the Boston Public Schools, providing outstanding leadership to ensure that all children in the City of Boston have access to quality educational opportunities. Dr. Payzant's philosophy and actions demonstrate the importance of collaboration and public engagement as fundamental to promoting student achievement. He serves as a role model for many of us, and to honor his tireless dedication to the students in the Boston Public Schools, the Boston School Committee has established the Thomas W. Payzant Public Service in Education Scholarship. One $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student graduating in the upcoming class, who has been accepted into an accredited higher education program and who has demonstrated strong leadership and service to his/her school and/or the district, while maintaining a solid academic record. The scholarship is for one year only. Funds will be distributed directly to recipient's school of choice once documentation is furnished confirming enrollment. |
| Eligibility: | To be eligible to apply, a student must have: (a) met all requirements to graduate from a Boston public high school in June. (b) demonstrated academic proficiency as documented by a minimum grade point average of 2.8, or demonstrated improvement from the 9th grade to the 12th grade as measured by an improved grade point average (GPA) and/or class rank. (c) Been accepted at an accredited college, university, community or junior college, or post-secondary vocational/technical program. (d) made significant contributions to improving education in the Boston Public Schools. |
