Background
The City is constantly looking for opportunities to enhance learning for school-age students in the City of Boston. The Mayor is committed to using technology to meet these learning goals. Both during and after-school, the City has committed resources to provide technology and training to increase learning opportunities.

As part of this overall commitment, in 2001 Mayor Thomas M. Menino and Apple Computers designed a pilot program that provided youth with the opportunity to learn about their environment using digital video camera and Apple I-Books. The participants traveled to different areas of the City to study specific environments including the Neponset and Muddy Rivers, the South Boston shoreline, Pope John Paul Park, Long Island, the Boston Harbor Islands and the Big Dig. After returning to their local community centers, youth edited and produced their digital movies and built web pages about their experiences. These web pages are posted on www.bostonyouthzone.com/teenzone. During the program, youth were able to learn about their environment, obtain digital imaging as well as editing and web page building skills allowing them to ultimately share their learning and education with others

2002-2003 Grant Program Description
Because of the success of this pilot program, the City and Apple Computer have designed a grant program that allowed 10 local 501c3 organizations to receive I-movie technology for use in their after-school programs. Each grant included one (1) Apple iBook, one (1) digital video camera and three (3) digital videotapes. The entire grant is valued at over $2,000. The grant also included one two-day training from Apple Computers on the use of the I-Book and the I-Movie software and ongoing technical support from the City on the creation of web pages and access to City resources.

Contest
All of the grant recipients were required to participate in an iMovie contest. The contest theme was "Landmarks of the City". The theme was meant to encompass learning about Boston's History, architecture, and local lore. Each organization designed their movie in their own unique way. The movies could include landmark's history, photos of the landmark at various stages, tours, a pictorial history, a drama about the landmark or anything that the organizations dreamed up that would result in their youth learning about the landmark.

After the movies were created they were submitted to the Boston iMovie committee. The Committee was comprised of several City Agencies (Boston 2:00 to 6:00, Boston Centers for Youth & Families, MIS, and the Trust Office). These are the winning iMovies as well as all of the wonderful movies that were created by the grant recipients.
