The Neponset River and Muddy River are two of Boston's rivers that the youth from Community Centers will visit and learn about. The Neponset River was a major industry area when this country was first being developed. Many textile, paper, and lumber mills were built and began to create a great deal of pollution. This pollution problem became apparent late in the 19th century but it was not addressed until the early 70's. Today many of these mills have closed or installed waste treatment facilities and the majority of the river and its tributaries meet state standards for swimming.

The Muddy River is part of the emerald necklace, a collection of parks and open space that connect through Boston. The river is currently heavily polluted, but the state of Massachusetts in a partnership with the city of Boston is currently working on a plan to restore the river and beautify it as well as prevent flooding along its banks.
